Math247 Wiki math screencasts made by students and teachers geared for K-7

Number and Operations

Cookies for Grampy
This activity requires students to make a cookie for Grampy with fractional pieces.  As the student builds the cookie with the fractions, it shows both a visual and the fraction that is built so far.  The student must decide what fraction to then add to that to make the whole cookie.
Number Line Bounce
This virtual manipulative can be used to visualize a sequence of operations on a number line and to create number sentences representing the operations.

The Math’s File Game Show

Activities can be done alone or as a group.  Students practice place value, algebra, probability, decimals, and negative numbers.  Contains games and teacher guides with print out activities.

Count On- Where’s the Monkey Activity

Using a grid and a city map, the student must find where the monkey is located.  This is a great activity to do alone or in small groups and then discuss strategies.
Math-O Interactive order of operations game

Aunty Math

Math Challenges for younger students.  Students find out about Aunty Math and her family and every other week, she posts a story about something related to her life and family.  With each story, there is a problem.  Students must try to figure out how to solve the problem and then post on her site their solution (a form is provided on the site).  Aunty Math then personally responds to their findings.  These story problems can be done as a class or in groups.

Algebra
Lure of the Labyrinth is a digital game for middle-school pre-algebra students. It includes a wealth of intriguing math-based puzzles wrapped into an exciting narrative game in which students work to find their lost pet - and save the world from monsters! Linked to both national and state mathematics standards, the game gives students a chance to actually think like mathematicians.

Domino Activity
Students explore whether it is possible to cover a 6x5 grid with 15 dominoes, then build a variety of "brick walls" and create a brick wall catalogue.

Traffic Jam Problem

Everyone must move so that the people originally standing on the right-hand stepping stones are on the left-hand stones, and those originally standing on the left-hand stepping stones are on the right-hand stones, with the center stone again unoccupied.   Contains a java-applet.

Fractals: An Introductory Lesson

Introduces what a fractal is and allow students to explore different kinds of fractals.  This activity is not entirely project-based but does allow for a tremendous amount of discussion.

Algebra-Fun With Calendars

Uses a fun mathematical puzzle to demonstrate solving a simple linear equation. It's an average math trick, but it's an excellent activity to demonstrate algebraic applications.

Interactive Problem Solving

Assists students in solving algebra story problems.  Helps students understand what the problem is focused on in a step by step process.  After taking students through the process, the students can then solve a variety of algebra problems that are on the site:

Geometry
Paper Pool Activity The interactive paper pool game in this i-Math investigation provides an opportunity for students to further develop their understanding of ratio, proportion, and least common multiple.
Attribute Trains
This activity involves practice of recognizing patterns.  The student must figure out first if the pattern relates to numbers, shapes or colors, they try to complete the pattern.

Transformations

Students go through a variety of steps to understand transformations and then they are able to change shapes using rotations, reflections, translations or enlargements - and their mouse.  The colored grids on the activity allows for more of a challenge.  Students do the following things with this activity:

Observe, understand, explore, and construct

The tools for each are similar to Geometer Sketchpad tools and allows for students to manipulate shapes using their mouse.

How Big is a Whale?

Lesson plan which incorporates the web and has students compare the lengths of three different types of whales to the size of trucks by using web resources and geometric concepts.

Pyramid Puzzle

This web activity could be an integrated activity with a social studies class.  Students must figure out the cost of building a pyramid using today’s resources and ancient methods. In teams students will plan, collect data, submit a bid for the job (only the lowest bidding company will be awarded the job), create a scale drawing and model, and present a final report to the class.
Interactives: British and Metric Conversions Explains how to convert mass units and how metric and English symbols are used to measure and express volume, length, temperature, and mass

Data Analysis

Mighty M&M Math

Students predict colors of M&M’s in a bag, find the actual percentages of those M&M’s, report their findings and hear back from other schools around the world that did the same activity.  A great way to combine math and geography.

Global Grocery List

Global Grocery List is a long standing Internet project that asks classes to go to their local grocery stores and record the prices for a list of common items that they can compare to prices in other parts of the world.

Complete instructions found at:

Income Levels & Social Class: is it all about cash?

Students will analyze income levels and cost of living expenses then relate them to social class.

Probability

Coin Flipper

(note: you need microworlds web player in order to run program which can be downloaded from site)

This activity should be either an introductory activity or a follow up to a lesson.

High Low Game

In this game, students must predict if the next card will be higher or lower than the one given.  This activity is a great way to begin a unit on probability and discuss chance and percentages of what the next card will be.

Racing Game with Two Dice

Players roll two dice, the lucky player moves one step to the finish, or everybody moves one step and the lucky player moves two steps to the finish. Parameters: the number of players, number of trials and length of the race.

Master Web

The object is to decipher the code represented by a series of colored balls. There are several features to make the game more or less challenging.   Students must try to solve the code.  Students could use this activity in conjunction with a math game evaluation that students do on math games.  Students can be provided with a scoring rubric, decide whether the game is good or not, show it to the class, explain how to play it and decide if it is challenging.

Problem Solving

The Game of Rush

This game is also known as the traffic game where students must figure out a way to get their car out of the maze in as few tries as possible.  Teams of students can try the activity and a class discussion can take place on which team got out first.  The games get progressively more difficult and as they do, it really promotes some great discussion.
Distance Rate Time Distance, rate and time investigations in traffic control sponsored by NASA

The Cereal Box Problem

Contains an online simulation which involves students predicting how many boxes of cereal they would have to buy in order to get all the different prizes the cereal company was giving away.  This activity is really a great probability project so it could be placed under the probability category.

Playing Mankala

Strategic game consisting of seven pits where seeds are placed one at a time, into the successive pits, moving counter-clockwise around the board. The game ends when all of the pits on one side of the board are empty. The player with seeds remaining gets to put them.

Numerical Amusements

A variety of number oriented math puzzles with directions and some guidance for students to work and play with.  Contains puzzles and then explanations on why it works the way it does.  These are great activities for times in math class when you have about 15 minutes left of class.  It also encourages group work and discussion.

Numbers in Nature

Explores the Fibonacci sequence using a sea shell and a variety of concepts.  Students are taken on guided tour and expected to solve problems along the way.

The Mint

This site focuses on helping students become more aware of what to do with their money.  There are so many great projects to do on this site, I can’t list just one.  This is a great site for a career club.
